CAN NORTHWEST VETERANS LAW REPRESENT ME IF I LIVE OUTSIDE OF OREGON?

CAN NORTHWEST VETERANS LAW REPRESENT ME IF I LIVE OUTSIDE OF OREGON?

Northwest Veterans Law family law attorneys are licensed to practice only in Oregon courts. We are authorized to represent clients in all 36 counties and, with electronic filings, are able to serve our clients’ needs without running to and from the courthouse. We are experienced in representing clients who live out of state and have the technology necessary to keep you informed every step of the way.

If you live outside of Oregon, Northwest Veterans Law can represent you if:
1) you plan to file your case with an Oregon court;
2) you already have a case pending before an Oregon court; or
3) your children live in Oregon and you want to enforce or modify a custody or parenting time judgment entered by a court in another state.

If you want to modify or enforce the provisions of a judgment from another state, you will likely need to register that out-of-state judgment in the Oregon county where you or your children now live. The process of transferring an out-of-state case to Oregon can be complicated but we can assist you through that process.

Oregon Revised Statutes 109.701 to 109.834 control which State court can make decisions regarding child custody and parenting time. Generally, the children must have lived in Oregon for at least six months before an Oregon court can make changes to an existing out of state judgment. However, you may qualify for an exception to this general residency requirement based on the facts of your case. We encourage you to consult with one of our family law attorneys to determine which State court has the authority to make the changes you seek.

While our family law attorneys can only represent litigants in Oregon courts, our VA appeals attorneys are licensed to represent Veterans throughout the United States. Please see our Veteran Appeals FAQs for more information.
